Internet Search & Research

Great information obtained through my summer online professional development class today.  Topic was Internet Search and Research.

Common concern with parents - not feeling comfortable having young students explore and use the Internet.

Students need to be taught how to take care of themselves while visiting the digital neighborhood called the Internet.  Just as parents teach their children not to cross the street without looking both ways, don't leave the yard or neighborhood while playing outside, don't talk to strangers etc. the same concepts need to be taught and modeled in the digital neighborhood.

You can't teach Internet searching and researching without tying in what it means to be a digital citizen.

With all the digital devices available, students of all ages are experiencing the digital world.

Starting as early as kindergarten with topics such as How to Keep Safe on the Internet, and How to Use the Internet are very appropriate at this age.

Then just build on skills and concepts as students advance grade levels.

The webinar on Internet Search and Research did a great job giving age appropriate examples of what topics should be introduced and reinforced at the elementary level.

Images

Watched a great video for my Summer Professional Development Class.

Learned about a lot of great websites/apps used to create original works of art as well as learning about some great sites/places to search for public domain images that students can use with their digital storybook projects, blog posts, twitter posts etc.

This is a quick original piece of art using the site art.com.

Common Core Writing Strands

Interacted with the ebook "How To Achieve the Common Core with Tech" through the writing strands.

A quote from the Common Core literacy I liked:

"Use of technology differentiates for student learning styles by providing an alternative method of achieving conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and applying this knowledge to authentic circumstances."

Technology tools to be explored using writing as the primary avenue for learning.

Storybird is a quick write tool I played around with. This tool reverses the writing process. The user picks the images first and then creates the story.  My target class for this activity was a kindergarten class.  The story is titled "Friends."  I really like this digital writing tool.

Blogging Thoughts

As a new technology integrationist this fall, I'm excited to discuss the impact of student blogging with the teachers that are a part of our 2014-15 Tech Team.  These teachers have been chosen as technology leaders in our district who are anxious and willing to integrate technology into their classrooms.  I will definitely share the resources I have learned while participating in the activities for blogging for this class.

Summer Online PD Introduction - Post #1

I'm looking forward to embarking on this technological journey with my new online classmates.  I'm excited to learn new things, grow in what I already know, and be challenged in what I don't know.
